Thursday Things

1. I’ve officially joined the 21st century–> I created a Facebook Page!

So, if you really do like me, please “like” my page. (<– click here!)

I’m thinking I’ll share extra stuff with my Facebook followers, like my green smoothie or juice combo of the day, my daily workouts, or perhaps the books I’m reading, or articles that I find interesting.

Let me know what kind of stuff you’d prefer to see on there!

2. Due to an overwhelming influx of questions about my experience with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I’ve also created an IIN FAQ page to answer all your questions in one place.

Let me know if I missed anything!

3. I believe in making gradual lifestyle changes, encouraging my clients to not give up anything before they’re mentally prepared to do so. If giving up a particular item in your diet sounds challenging, don’t force it–> because you may find yourself over-compensating for it later! (Much better to focus on adding healthy things to your diet, so there’s less room for the other stuff!)

Coffee has been one of those things for me. I just couldn’t imagine my mornings without it, and when I attempted to give it up, I always went back to it with more fervor than ever before.

Now that I’ve embraced my daily coffee habit, I’ve been surprised to find it more and more unappealing. Perhaps my body is finally ready to move on?

4. Ever since buying my Kindle, I’ve been going through books like crazy. I like to alternate fiction books with non-fiction books, so after finishing a rather mindless read, my latest book is of the non-fiction variety…

[source]

This book made Livestrong’s list of 21 Must-Read Health, Fitness and Nutrition books, so I figured it would be a good choice.

Has anyone else read it?

5. My mom makes a mean Blueberry Crisp. Her traditional version is loaded with refined flour and sugar, but this time around she made a version using almond flour, honey and freshly picked blueberries!

Maybe if I ask nicely, she’ll share the recipe with us. ;)

Reader Feedback: Any extras you’d like to see me share on Facebook? What are you reading lately?

  • Ooh can you do a review of that book when you’re done? I’d love to hear more! Right now I’m reading Drop Dead Healthy by AJ Jacobs, and it is so, so good!! I can’t stop laughing. I’ll do a review when I’m finished. The problem is that I only really have time to read at night before bed, and even the best books have the effect of making me fall asleep!

    • Yes, I’ll definitely do a review when I’m finished! It might be a while, though… this book looks DENSE. Luckily, I have a long flight ahead of me this weekend to get back to LA, so I’ll have some time on my hands! ;)

  • I just finished reading Spirit Junk by Ms. Gabby Bernstein..most of it anyway..I borrowed it from my sis and I was visiting so I returned it a little before finishing…it was a good read! I am in between, any recommendations?

I have experienced the exact same thing with coffee! I gave it up “cold turkey” a few months ago, for a month. It was difficult and I went through a lot of cravings for it! I “reintroduced it” back into my diet, and consume much, much less. Now I find it just doesn’t make me feel good and I’ve found myself easing into not drinking it. The taste isn’t even as appealing as it used to be – it’s just so much more a force of habit in the morning. Funny how our bodies work!

Hello! I love reading your blog as you discuss a lot of the things i find realky interesting. I read Good calories Bad calories a few months ago, very interesting. I’m definitely noticing a shift to his kind of thinking these days. Also, john briffa wrote Escape the diet Trap which echoes similar things. I really liked Barry Groves’ Trick or Treat – its really made me question all the ‘government advice’ we’ve been fed the pst few decades, and the importance of being a bit of an investigator when it comes to our personal health :)

I really look forward to my cup of morning coffee, and no one should ask me for anything before I’ve had it (LOL). I have cut out the afternoon cup though, in favor of green tea. I’m so glad you have a FB page now, I liked it right away! Reading “Sugar Nation” right now about diabetes and how US medicine treats it. Scary stuff. Very close to my heart, as my stepfather had to have his foot amputated this week due to diabetes. I do NOT want to become a statistic, and your blog is really helping me embrace healthy eating!

I’ve read the condensed, more unscientific version of this Gary Taubes’ book, titled Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It!

It was one of the first books I read after starting to workout and eat better about 4.5 years (and 75lbs) ago, both are GREAT books, and MUST reads for sure!

Other books I’ve read which I always recommend are; Wheat Belly, The Primal Blueprint, Escape The Diet Trap, and The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet.

Yay for your Facebook page! I’m totally there.

And I am still not ready to give up coffee. Gave it up for two years, all while making the husband coffee every single morning. In the end, I just think I’m a coffee drinker. And, I get up at 5 am almost every day. It’s just too painful, especially in the winter. Yup, I’m a user.

You’ll have to tell me about that book. I often get annoyed with mainstream “diet” books, though many have a nugget of truth in there. Hard to judge a book by its cover! Oy. And on the other hand, perhaps any book that gets more Americans to eat healthier is good.

  • I’ve read GCBC. His research is impressive, but his conclusions are far too simplistic and one-size-fits-all, IMHO. Still, a good read to have under your belt, with lots of interesting science tidbits.

    • I’ve heard that from other people, too– that the book draws rather broad conclusions, that might not be applicable to everyone. I must say, I was rather surprised at the size! I feel like I’m reading a science text book…

I can’t decide what extras I’d like to see posted on your Facebook page because they all sound great. Umm…that photo looks super good. I think you should definitely convince your mom to give the recipe to you. I’ve made your sugar cookies using almond flour a couple times and my husband told me they were his favorite cookies. Ever! So thanks for the other awesome recipes you’ve already posted. :)

  • Finally with the facebook page- awesome! On another note, I had a colonic with Gil Jacobs today and mentioned my blog in passing and he said “oh, are you the Detoxinista that I’ve been hearing so much about?”. I said “No, but she’s fabulous!”. :D Apparently Gil has had many clients rave about you!

    • Oh my gosh, that’s the coolest thing ever!!!! I love Gil!!

In other news, I just figured out how to make my Facebook page “like” your Facebook page. ;)

  • Robyn
