Maple Iced “Latte”

This recipe is for those of you who miss frou-frou coffee drinks, but would rather avoid drinking actual coffee.

male iced latte in a glassI used to love coffee, but when I got pregnant last year, it was one of the first things to go from my diet. Sure, I could have enjoyed a cup of decaf coffee every now and then, but the flavor isn’t the same and even the decaf version may still have a negative impact on our overall health, so it wasn’t something I’d want to risk while pregnant!

Luckily, I’ve finally found a coffee alternative that is naturally caffeine-free and tastes nearly as indulgent as a latte from a coffee shop. The key to the coffee-like flavor is Teeccino, an herbal tea that has a roasted taste, similar to that of a light coffee. I had actually tried this tea in the past, after hearing that it tasted like coffee, and I have to admit– I didn’t like it. Mostly because it doesn’t taste like the dark-roast coffee I had come to enjoy.

However, now that my expectations are in line, I can enjoy this tea for the delicious blend that it is. I’m particularly fond of the Dandelion Caramel Nut flavor, which reminds me of a holiday drink that my husband became mildly obsessed with last year. When paired with homemade almond milk and a splash of pure maple syrup, it definitely fixes any cravings we have for a decadent coffee drink!


Maple Iced Latte (Vegan)
serves 1


1 Dandelion Caramel Nut “tee-bag”
1/2 cup boiled water
1/2 cup non-dairy milk (I used homemade almond milk)
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup, or to taste
handful of ice


Pour the 1/2 cup of boiled water over the Dandelion Caramel Nut tee-bag, and allow to steep for 5 minutes.

Gently squeeze the tee-bag before discarding, for a stronger flavor, then pour into a glass and place in the freezer to cool for about 10 minutes. Remove the glass from the freezer, and add the milk and maple syrup, to taste. Stir well, then add a few ice cubes for an ice-cold treat!

Substitution Notes:

For a sugar-free version, feel free to use stevia or xylitol instead of the maple syrup. It won’t have the same maple flavor, but it will still be a tasty treat!

i literally make the exact same drink every day – except i don’t use maple, and instead use 1T maca and call it a “lata maca” aha. it’s cheesy, but i have found that maca really helps me regulate my energy throughout the day and having this in the afternoon is a perfect pick me up. 🙂


How is it hot? I’m not one for iced coffees, but I could drink hot coffee all day if I didn’t have any self control. =)

    It reminds me of an iced vanilla latte, but with more maple flavor. I was actually trying to replicate a maple-flavored latte that my husband loves from Peet’s coffee shop. It was such a popular flavor, they sold-out of it before Christmas!

Yum, I am so going to try this!! I gave up coffee creamer for new years so coffee just doesn’t taste the same for me. This may be my ticket to going – dare I say – coffee free? Who knows, but it is worth a shot 🙂


Oh, and do you know what it means by Natural Caramel Nut Flavor? How do they achieve the caramel flavor? Anytime I see those words “natural flavor” I worry…


    same here, rachel!! i always avoid “natural flavors” because the list of things that it can be is crazy!

      I actually got a response from them yesterday. First, before I post it, let me say that from what I understand you can’t assume something is healthy just because it’s natural. For example, if you take a natural substance and separate it from it’s other components your body may not recognize it or be able to extract nutrients from it properly. It’s best to consume things in their truly natural, preferably raw, and whole state. To me it kind of sounds like their flavors are so processed and tampered with that they’re basically just chemicals like in a lot of other packaged foods :(. I’m sure they’re still a little better than most but probably best in moderation. Anyway, I’m sure y’all have probably heard of all that already so here’s what they said: “Thanks so much for your question and your interest in Teeccino! Our flavors are organic compliant, so no artificial ingredients are allowed in them. We work with flavorists who use steam distillation or alcohol extraction for the aromatic compounds that go into the organic-compliant flavors in our products. They are also free of common allergens (soy, gluten, corn, dairy, shellfish, animal byproducts, etc.) because FDA requires ALL allergens to be listed on the label, even if they are included in flavorings.       The caramel nut flavor you asked about is a complex mixture of flavor components. It includes aromatics distilled from fruits and nuts, including hazelnuts and pecans. The flavor houses that we work with are able to extract isolated flavor components without the other components that don’t contribute to flavor. For example, in the case of our “natural coffee flavor,” they are able to extract flavor components of coffee without extracting the acidity and caffeine with the coffee flavor! Other components used to achieve the coffee flavor include organic chicory and even garlic, which may give you an idea of how the flavors are compounded and layered to achieve the end result—a product that tastes like coffee, without any of the deleterious effects or constituents of coffee.

    IDK if its true or not but I saw and read that beaver anal glands makes “natural flavoring”. That made me not a happy person so I read and when I see that phrase I go the other way. That is just nasty to me. Can’t wait to see what Megan finds out about this. I’d be willing to try it, looks yummy


      Yeah, I’ve heard that as well! “Natural flavoring” doesn’t always mean that but you never know when it does. They put lots of things under that name… I really wish everyone was forced to list every ingredient and without calling it a different name! I guess they wouldn’t be able to though at least as far as fragrances/flavors because I’ve heard some of them have hundreds of ingredients.


Megan – Get the DARK ROAST flavor – that actually tastes STRONG like black coffee. The caramel nut flavor is much more mild and is slightly sweet.

I can’t drink coffee, and just learned about Teechino this summer, and I bought both kinds. I prefer the dark roast (gluten free version of course). It’s really good with almond milk or halfnhalf. The longer it sits, the better.

Just be really really careful when you squeeze the tea bag. I’m pretty gentle but I’ve had MANY explode on me!

Hi, Megan! I am dying to try this. Had a question, though, about the homemade almond milk to put into it. When I’ve tried making your recipe for almond milk creamer before, it comes out slightly bitter tasting, which sort of ruins the experience. I’m using raw almonds from Trader Joe’s and organic coconut oil and doing it in a Vitamix. Is there a key to getting it to be smooth-tasting and not bitter? Thanks!


how is teecino gluten-free?!?!??!?! it doesn’t make sense to me!


I’ve been drinking teeccino for a few years & have tried almost all of their flavors. the dandelion dark roast tea bags & maya herbal coffee french roast are the best & have the strongest flavors. the “coffee” is brewed like real coffee. I make all kinds of drinks- hot & cold, even my own “frappuccinos. for a very indulgent hot drink i mix half a cup of my homemade hot cocoa (w/almond or dairy milk) & half a cup brewed teeccino. yum. thanks for this recipe megan.

Can you drink real coffee with a food combining diet? How about coffee with cow’s milk? I’ve searched your site and couldn’t find an answer to this. I’m new to food combining and am trying to figure out where to start.


    I’m not sure how it fits into all food combining plans, but I think coffee is perfectly fine when enjoyed in moderation at least 30 minutes before a meal. Depending on how much milk you use (like in a latte), it would take longer to digest.


The java flavor is stronger and delicious iced! You can also use their ground coffee in an espresso machine for hot lattes!
