1. Despite the pollution and heavy traffic, living in Los Angeles does have its perks– namely, the weather. I’ve been able to wear sandals in January!

Juil sandals This particular pair of sandals was sent to me by Juil, a company that offers unique earthing sandals and footwear.

From Juil’s website:

Studies have shown that maintaining a direct connection between our bodies and the Earth’s surface is beneficial to our health. Our earth’s surface carries a natural, bountiful source of electrons that our bodies also need. These electrons have a balancing effect on our nervous systems and quench free radicals as well. Essentially, when we connect directly with the earth’s surface, electrons rising from its soil or sand will enter our bodies and turn the “negatives” we build up day-to-day into “positives.”

While the easiest way to stay grounded is to walk barefoot, that’s not always possible, fashionable, or appropriate. Most footwear insulates your body from making a connection with the earth, but the copper “dots” in Juil earthing shoes act as a conduit and allow you to stay truly connected and balanced.

While I haven’t noticed a significant difference from wearing these grounding sandals yet, I do love the quality and style of these shoes– they’re cute and comfortable! So if I happen to get a benefit from the copper plates in the sole, while wearing cute shoes, it’s just an added bonus.

2. Of course, I still love non-sandal weather, too.

mam and babyIt gives us a great excuse to dress up our little guy in cute winter hats! (“Winter” here is anything below 70-degrees.)

3. Learning to make basic pantry staples from scratch can create quite a problem.

homemade marinara in a potJust like when I started making my own almond milk at home, I’ve started making my own marinara sauce, too– and now I’m spoiled! The homemade batches taste so much better than store-bought stuff, it’s difficult to enjoy anything else. Looks like I’m going to have to stock up on some extra glass jars, so I always have this sauce on hand!

4. Another thing I’d be better off not knowing about?

packages of sun cups

Sun Cups. I’ve always been a fan of peanut butter cups, but I didn’t try a sunflower butter cup until recently– and they’re delicious. The company sent me these samples, which are a convenient treat for those who need to remain gluten-free and nut-free. I love the ratio of sunflower butter-to-chocolate! They happened to arrive on my birthday last week, so they were the perfect way to celebrate!

Reader Feedback: Have you tried anything new this week?

*Disclaimer: Juil and Sun Cups both sent me complimentary product samples, but I am under no obligation to post a positive review, and I have no incentive for you to make a purchase from either of these companies.

what is the recipe for your homemade marinara sauce

Cassie Vaughn

I tried Fitnessista’s breakfast cookies. They did the trick without tasting anything – in my opinion – like cookies. More like granola bars but round.

I started making my own almond coffee creamer a few months ago and now I can’t go back. The flavor is so much better and I love knowing there’s no weird thickeners or preservatives in it. I wish it wasn’t so labor intensive though. Have you ever tried extracting the almond pulp from the blended milk through a juicer? My husband suggested this last night as I was squeezing my pulp through cloth napkins. I’m afraid it might be a messy disaster.

Would you like to share your coffee creamer recipe?

I wish it was summer(ish) here. I just love walking barefoot through grass, it’s so freeing 🙂

I would kill to wear sandals right now! I live in WI and its been ridiuclous!

I just tried Textured Soy (or veggie)Protein granules. And, wow!! I couldn’t believe the meat like texture it has. Although I do eat meat occasionally, I wanted to give something else a try. These were amazing! Next up:I need to see if they are “hubby approved” or not =)

I work at a grocery store and we started stocking the sun cups a couple months ago and I can’t stop eating them!
Recently I started making my own vegetable stock. Without even thinking about the crazy amount of money I save the taste is so much better than anything I could buy from the store.

Happy belated birthday!

I found these wheat free cookies at my organic supermarket. They come in choc chip with hazelnut, almond and chocolate and orange. Still filled with sugar, but these are the first wheat/ gluten free cookies I tried from a store that actually taste like cookies. They are absolutely delish!

I haven’t tried it yet, but this week I have been thinking about making green juice from the green leafy carrot tops. Has you ever tried this Megan? Has anyone tried it?

Yes! I do this in my green smoothies with my vitamix. It’s extremely good for you, just start with a little bit and adjust to taste, it can be strong!

I would love to see more kitchen basic recipes. I’m not the best cook so healthy, low sodium marinara sauce and vegetable or chicken stocks would be awesome to learn to make. Plus my bf suffers from stomach ulcers so getting him to eat better is critical. I just made your pecan date truffles for his father for his bday and he loved them! Love your site!

OMGosh sunflower cups! Thank you sweet baby jesus!

Brittany – I laughed out loud at your comment!

Love your sandals!! So cute!! Would like to have your marinara sauce recipe!

Love your blog and your recipes. The sandals look nice but the supposedly scientific BS reasoning is beyond ridiculous and made me laugh really hard. Earth carries electrons (?) that are somehow beneficial to our body??? By wearing these sandals I will capture these mysterious electrons, heal my nervous system and quench free radicals (why would I even want that?).

Kristen E.

Those sandals are adorable! I would love to try a pair. Seriously so cute!

I’ve been making my own almond butter cups for a while. I got my recipe from my friend that has a blog at

She has a lot of wonderful recipes, but this is one of my favs! They are so good. I can’t go back to store bought nut-butter cups. You should give them a try!

Cynthia Thurlow

Care to share your marinara recipe?

The sunbutter cups have been a treat for my older son who has severe treenut allergies/peanut allergies and cannot enjoy the more conventional options :))

Gail G

Love your blog. I’ve learned so much from you. Can’t hardly wait for your book. Hope the marinara sauce will be in your cookbook!

Do you have a marinara recipe that you can share?

Lea Holz

I’m a big fan of a company from Boulder, CO called Justin’s Nut Butter. They make all sorts of great products, and also make cups very similar to this with almond and peanut butter and dark chocolate (I’m not sure if they have cups with sunflower butter). Tried one recently, and I’m hooked! I will definitely be trying these. Thanks for the review!

OMG, I discovered SunCups last year, and they ARE SO GOOD. I’ve only had the dark chocolate kind, because mint cups sound gross, caramel just seems sugar sugar, and milk chocolate is not my thing. IT’S SOO delicious! Way better than Justin’s. Whole Foods has them on sale sometimes so when I want to have a treat I get them there. That’s definitely not very often though 😉

That picture of you and the baby though…. I mean too presh! Marinara sauce is the ONE thing I still buy canned, but I want to start canning my own and storing in Ball jars. By any chance is there a post on canning coming in the near future?

PS.. Cannot wait for your cookbook!!!! I’ve never found someone, let alone a recipe blog, that resonates so similarly with the way I eat! Absolutely adore you.

Isn’t it funny how once you start making things from scratch at home it’s hard to eat anything else! I do the same even with restaurants.

Your baby is so cute!! And you both look gorgeous together!
