What I Ate Wednesday

I’ve been feeling a bit under-the-weather lately, thanks to allergy season and a compromised immune system (due to pregnancy), so I’ve been starting my mornings with a mashed clove of garlic and a bit of raw apple cider vinegar diluted in water. It’s not tasty, but it usually does the trick.

When my appetite rolled around, I continued on my green juice kick.

I’m hoping these daily juices will also give my immune system the boost it needs, because we’re getting ready to travel for the long weekend, and I need all the help I can get! This mix contained Romaine lettuce, celery, carrots, cucumber, kale, a small apple and a lemon. So delicious!


It was a particularly busy day, so I ended up grazing up until dinner. My stomach room also seems to be shrinking, so smaller meals might have to become a regular thing until September arrives…

Between noon and 6pm, my food looked something like this:

Fresh pineapple, eaten directly out of the bowl from the fridge. I pretty much pick away at the bowl until I’m satisfied!

Followed later by 3 pasture-raised eggs cooked in butter, with a heaping pile of spinach, onions, green pepper and topped with some melted raw goat cheddar.

bowl of plain goat yogurtLater, I needed another snack. A bowl of plain goat yogurt, sweetened with pure maple syrup and honey hit the spot. (I forgot to take a picture until I reached the end of the bowl… I was really excited to eat it!)

Even later, I took some photos for an upcoming recipe post, and then ate the subject matter: a Peanut Butter Banana ice pop! These are so good, our friends have already helped us polish off the entire batch that I made yesterday.

Like I mentioned above, we are getting ready to travel, so we’re trying to clean out our fridge as much as possible before we leave. I roasted up an assortment of random veggies from the week, and threw them over a leafy green salad with a balsamic dressing to start off the meal.

Followed by a large bowl of steamed cauliflower, smothered in raw goat feta! This is one of my favorite comfort foods, so I was happy to finish it off.

For dessert, I enjoyed a banana-chocolate milkshake, made with homemade hemp milk! So good.

I assume raw apple cider vinegar is safe during pregnancy since you are using it, but I’ve heard conflicting things about it. Do you know if it’s also safe while breastfeeding?


    As far as I know, apple cider vinegar is considered safe for pregnancy, so I would assume it would also be safe for breastfeeding. I use it in salad dressings all the time! I do think it’s possible to get “too much of a good thing,” but I only take a teaspoon diluted in water at a time, so I’m not too worried about that. Of course, you should always consult with your doctor before adding any new supplements to your routine!


      Thank you so much for always giving quick responses to posts by your followers! There are other blogs that I follow that rarely respond. While I realize it is very time consuming (and maybe not possible) to respond to everyone, it just makes me more interested to see questions being answered (and in a timely way)! You are my favorite…I’m so glad I found your blog!

I drink Raw ACV daily! The key to making it taste better for me is adding a packet of stevia and LOTS of ice! Making it nice and cold and more diluted makes it taste more like a cold tea. I’ve begun to crave it daily in the afternoon! Hope that’s helpful!

So sorry to hear you aren’t feeling well! I’m curious about the garlic/ACV combo for helping out in that area- why/how does it help? I’d love to understand it better so that I can try it out next time I’m feeling under the weather. Thanks!


    Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties and also contains an active ingredient known to fight infection and bacteria. The raw apple cider vinegar is helpful in cutting through mucus and congestion. I find that they really help if I start using them at the first sign of a cold, and get lots of rest and hydration.


I got a chuckle out of the Facebook post of this article. You had a picture of the unidentified PB-Banana-sicle, but were discussing ACV & mashed garlic in the text below it. I thought, “Wow! I know she’s creative, but how in the world did she work those two things into a popsicle? I’ve gotta see this!” I was relieved to see the confection sans the ACV & garlic. ๐Ÿ™‚
I love ACV for a stomach ache. It seems counterintuitive for an acidic stomach, but it usually works.

Hey…I should probably know this by now, but how and for how long are you steaming the cauliflower?


    I am really bad about setting a timer, but I cook it in my steam basket and can usually smell when it’s done– I’d guess about 8 minutes? I stick a fork in it to see if it’s tender enough, which is how I judge if it’s done or not.


As always, it all looks delicious! I’m a big pineapple fan myself; it’s my favorite sweet tooth indulgence.

I’m wondering, what’s your typical time/temp combo for roasting veggies? And do you have any secrets to make them come out great? I find I over or undercook roasted veggies more often than not, or they come out soggy. I don’t know what I do wrong. :/

Thank you for the clove of garlic and vinegar tip…I am always extremely and icchhy because of a compromised immune system as well. Mine is due to a spleenectomy and tumor removal during surgery along with Chemotherapy…I am trying to rebuild my system.


Hi, How do you eat the garlic clove raw? Do you mix it with something or just crush it and eat it? I find garlic cloves are too strong for me to eat by themselves. Do you use a garlic press or how do you crush it?


    I usually use my blender to blend my garlic cloves in a bit of water, so I can take it like a shot! I can’t stand the flavor of eating them straight, either, though I’ve been known to do that when I’m really desperate…


Hi Megan I always read your what I ate:-) and during your pregnancy I have found that you do not drink coffee, … have you give up of it? Or just drink only cup or so a day.
Do you have any food aversion during pregnnacy?


    Yes, I did give up coffee when we started trying to get pregnant, and I have not been drinking it since. Maybe I will again someday, after I’m done breastfeeding, since I do still love the flavor of coffee.

Just started following! I must try the hemp milk recipe. I’m a vegetarian and looking for more protein sources. I feel like a lack of protein is inhibiting weight loss. Great ideas for your meals above. ๐Ÿ™‚

Is your green smoothie still properly combined? I assumed that fruit (in that case the apple) should be eaten alone?!


    Fresh fruit can be combined with leafy greens and other fresh fruits (with the exception of melons, which I always eat alone), so my morning smoothies are usually properly combined. The drink above is actually a green juice, so the fiber is removed by a juicer, and that makes everything in it properly combined, since it’s simply liquid with no fiber to digest.

Congrats on your pregnancy! I’m pregnant also and was feeling under the weather, and I hate taking medicine, even when I’m not pregnant. What I did was twice a day for two days I smashed a clove of garlic, covered it with honey, and swallowed it with an OJ chaser – and I feel as good as new! Garlic works wonders!


Please be extra careful with raw milk cheese. It’s safer if it says aged 60 days. I work for a health department and we’ve had to experience several pregnant women who lost their babies from using raw milk products (some almost close to full term). Listeria is huge risk with raw milk products. “Illegal cheese” that might not be aged can be available to us as consumers, just be careful. It was a terrible experience for us.


    I am very careful to ONLY eat raw cheese that has been labeled “aged for 60 days.” I wouldn’t want to take any chances!

Is this example day of eats good for a “detox” I wonder?
Any thoughts on 1-3 day fruit fasts?
I’m interested in juice cleanses but A) can’t afford the 3-day ones, B) don’t own a juicer.
Possible to detox WITHOUT a blender or juicer?

I need a detox/cleanse badly…terribly constipated, I don’t exercise due to issues, and keep binging at night…I’ve found a few here: would love love your thoughts…I NEED to try something, so seriously, just your initial thoughts on these or another? I need hope:




– or know of any yourself? Again, I know this will be a lifelong process (and I will be going to CBT therapy soon) but in the meantime I need to rid myself of the waste matter (constipated) and brain fog and feeling out of sorts with uncertainty of what to eat…I need some hope…

    I’m not a fan of drastic fasts or detox plans, so I’d recommend reading one of the following books, which both provide quick results but also a plan you can continue to follow for life:

    The Raw Food Detox Diet

    The Beauty Detox Solution


      The Beauty Detox solution is too cumbersome and complicated for me. I need quick, efficient and simple (if its not simple, I get stressed out and overwhelmed). I kind of like the Raw Food Detox Diet, but have no juicer and it seems so LOW calorie…plus I can’t get raw goat cheese (I can find organic if I look hard enough). The first week on the Raw Food detox diet has a lot of grains and very little protein too…sounds nice, but is that really good to “clean” me out? And so little protein? I’m on very lower end of weight and don’t want to lose. Yet, I think the foods I do eat (though “healthy” and force are making me sick ๐Ÿ™ ).
      I’ve NO juicer, buying a tiny blender soon…
      I also CRAVE fruit (hot), yet worry I might be having candiad or something …I have a lot of brain fog/muscle aches and my doctor said I’m LOW in sodium and to eat more salty foods, etc…I’ve been adding a bit of sea salt to meals (but I get sodium from mustard and hummus, etc that I eat too)…yet ironically I’m SUPER thirsty, and I think dehydrated (hence the cramping, fatigue, headaches, slow slow walking, etc)..but how does one balance that? Cause low in sodium and yetif I drink too much I only “flush out my system ” too much (not good)…not sure about juices, etc…tons of sugar each and every day.

      Thoughts on other websites or blogs or books that show realistic food plans for someone like me who needs a not drastic jolt? And thoughts on those smoothies/juices I linked? Obviously NOT the best, but I’m kind of wondering if they’d be “okay”.
