What I Ate Wednesday

Morning

As I mentioned earlier, my taste buds and appetite seem to be back to normal. Coincidentally, this occurred right around the same time our baby was able to start “tasting” what I eat, too! It seems that he or she may already be loving green juice as much as I do.

I’ve been trying to alternate which dark greens I add to my juice each week, so this week it’s been dandelion greens. They don’t taste great and they make my juice a murky color, but everything else I add to the juice seems to cover them up pretty well. This mix included a romaine heart, dandelion greens, celery, carrots, cucumber, apple and lemon. It was surprisingly filling!

Early Afternoon

When I felt hungry again, I started off my lunch with a large salad, smothered in shredded carrots (thanks to my Salad Shooter), half a ripe avocado, and drizzled with homemade Honey Balsamic dressing. I absolutely love the texture that shredded vegetables add to my salads! I could eat this one every single day.

I followed my salad with a batch of Cherry Chocolate avocado pudding. One of my favorite desserts of all time!

Late Afternoon

Because I’ve been craving such an incredibly clean diet lately, after a few months of a not-so-clean diet, I’ve been intentionally adding a mis-combined meal to my day, to make sure I don’t send my body into any sort of cleansing-mode. Detoxing is the last thing you want to do while pregnant!

Two pasture-raised eggs fried in butter, served with two slices of sprouted wheat toast topped with butter, did the trick.

Evening

After my evening walk, I snacked on half a pint of organic strawberries while preparing dinner.

For dinner, I steamed up half a head of cauliflower, then tossed the cooked florets with fresh spinach, herbs and a drizzle of rosemary-infused olive oil. I topped it all off with a handful of crumbled raw goat feta. Holy cow, it’s delicious.

For dessert, I’m back to chocolate banana milkshakes. Austin and I can’t get enough of them! I don’t use a specific recipe, but it’s simply frozen bananas, almond milk, cocoa powder, vanilla, and ice. I’m thinking I should start making a vanilla-version soon, because even the small amount of cocoa seems to affect me before bedtime now.

It’s great to see you are back to your appetites ๐Ÿ™‚ but I’m a bit confused about what you wrote at you “Late Afternoon” segment. How can eating healthy the way you always do send your body into detox mode?

    If you eat too clean of a diet (especially with green juice and lots of raw food), you might find yourself feeling some detox symptoms, including headaches, sore throat, exhaustion, etc. If I had been eating this way my entire pregnancy, these symptoms would probably not arise, but since I was eating heavier, denser foods with few vegetables for the first 4-5 months, my body is not used to such a clean, raw food diet anymore! Those who have tried jumping into 100% raw food diet after coming off a mainstream diet of heavier fare will often experience discomfort, and without taking extra cleansing measures (such as sweating, bowel cleansing, etc.) they may feel much worse before they feel better.

    I felt myself getting a sore throat after having the green juice, raw salads and avocado pudding, and because I’m familiar with the feeling, I knew it was detox symptom. You don’t want toxins to be awakened in the body and pass through the placenta during pregnancy, so the easiest way to stop any sort of detox is by eating less-cleansing foods, like the example above. While eggs and toast aren’t necessarily considered “unhealthy” foods, they are dense enough to stop the cleansing process. Almost immediately, my sore throat went away! Again, this wouldn’t be a concern if I weren’t pregnant, because there are other things you can do to help the body eliminate toxins in that situation. But during pregnancy, you don’t want to attempt any sort of detox or cleanse.

What an awesome day of eats! Everything looks delish! I’ve been hearing so much about dandelion greens here lately and I really want to give them a try, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to find them in my area. I’ll have to do some investigating.

Hi Megan! Thanks so much for all of your awesome posts! You’ve inspired me to add green smoothies into my daily routine. I’m curious about the carrots, though. Do you juice them first and add just the juice? Or do you just but the carrots whole into the blender?

If you want to keep the chocolate flavor in your banana milkshakes but without caffeine, try carob powder. I can’t have caffeine in any form, so I love these. I’m not used to chocolate anymore, but even my chocolate loving family loves these smoothies made with carob.
