What I Ate Wednesday: New Year’s Day

I stayed out a little too late on New Year’s Eve.

As a result, I woke up at noon on New Year’s Day.

It’s rare that I get to sleep in, so I was happy to take advantage of my day off! So, not surprisingly, my first meal of the day was “brunch.” On holidays, I tend to relax my food combining rules at bit, so you’ll notice that my meals yesterday weren’t perfectly combined. But, they were all delicious!


stack of paleo pancakes on a platePaleo Pancakes. I used sunflower seed butter and cinnamon in this batch, and it was amazingly good. The banana was so sweet and ripe, I didn’t even need syrup!

The funny thing about baking with sunflower seed butter is that is has a strange reaction to baking soda– it turns the batter green! You can’t tell from this picture, but the inside of my pancakes were dark green. Probably too creepy to serve to company!


kale salad in a bowlI snacked on some leftover kale salad that I made for a New Year’s Eve party the night before. This kale salad is the BEST salad I’ve ever made. Period.

salad on a plateWe met up with some friends for dinner, at one of the only restaurants open on New Year’s day! I snacked on some sweet potato fries as an appetizer, then ordered this large Pear, Feta & Kale salad for my entree.

For dessert, I had a scoop of real vanilla ice cream. Yum.

I was travelling and with relatives/inlaws over the holidays so I was sort of stuck…it’s easy to find a reasonable salad at most restaurants and just stick to fruit and coffee at breakfasts, but I relaxed every food rule I have just to not be “weird food girl” and to keep my sanity at people’s houses…I miscombined, I ate bread, I drank booze, I ate more meat than usual….and it was all awesome. I also kept a nice supply of dark chocolate a la detoxinista in my purse ๐Ÿ™‚ Weirdly, my pants are fitting looser! Win!

Those pancakes look awesome, I don’t care if they’re green and holy yum, that pear and cheese salad looks amazing!!

I love that you can relax your food ideals and indulge from time to time! So many people are so rigid, and make it seem like anything else is just weakness of will and deeply damaging or something.

I made potato latkes for New Year’s Eve to bring to neighbors’ house. They were completely unhealthy and totally great. I also ate real sour cream on them! Course the next day was full of fresh fruit, green juice and smoothies. But that was just what I wanted then too. It’s sometimes important to eat exactly what you want!

Just to say I’m looking forward to the kale salad recipe… I don’t mind kale, but am yet to be completely overwhelmed with happiness by it, so looking forward to trying your very promising sounding version!


I am excited to see your new recipe for the kale salad..I have been eating a lot of salads lately and recently got back into eating kale..it’s so good with some garlic gold balsamic vinaigrette and either lightly heated in a skillet or roasted in a convection oven. I have also been making some delicious donuts that are mostly made with protein powder, almond meal, and a little GF flour mix…mmm! ๐Ÿ™‚

p.s. A good friend made ur pumpkin muffins and gave them as part of her gift…they were delish!!

I ate too much bad chocolate (it looked like simple dark chocolate, turned out to be partially hydrogenated garbage) during the holidays and now I am blowing up like a balloon. I relaxed my standards way too much this holiday season, although no grains at all, don’t miss them but I did eat goats milk cheese, which is ok for some people but I have autoimmune issues so I shouldn’t be touching it. My body feels terrible, I’ve got to detox.
