I love it when something healthy tastes absolutely decadent.
This shake is brimming with vitamins and nutrients, but all you’ll taste is the sweet and rich flavor of a chocolate covered strawberry–> in the form of a milkshake.
Featuring a frozen banana and strawberries for an ice-cream-like texture, plus a bit of avocado for added creaminess, this shake is something you can indulge in daily, without any guilt! I always sneak a handful or two of leafy greens in my smoothies and shakes, but no one will ever know, thanks to the sweet strawberries and rich cocoa powder.
It’s no wonder that I’ve enjoyed this shake nearly every day this week!

Chocolate Covered Strawberry Shake
serves 1
Ingredients:
1 cup water or almond milk
1 frozen banana
1 cup frozen organic strawberries
1/4 ripe avocado
2 handfuls fresh spinach
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 heaping tablespoons raw cacao powder
ice, if needed for texture
Directions:
In a high-speed blender, combine all of the ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy. Add a few ice cubes, if desired, for a thicker, more ice-cream-like texture. Serve immediately!
*Note: If you don’t own a high-speed blender, I’d recommend blending the water, avocado and spinach first, until they are completely broken down with no bits or pieces visible. Then, add in the frozen fruit, vanilla and cocoa, and blend again until completely smooth.
- 1 cup water or almond milk
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup frozen organic strawberries
- ¼ ripe avocado
- 2 handfuls fresh spinach
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 heaping tablespoons raw cacao powder
- ice, if needed for texture
- In a high-speed blender, combine all of the ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy. Add a few ice cubes, if desired, for a thicker, more ice-cream-like texture. Serve immediately!
Enjoy!

Reader Feedback: What’s your favorite smoothie or shake combo lately? I thought this one was particularly appropriate for Valentine’s Day

OMG! This is now my favourite foodie blog. I’ve enjoyed trying out a couple of your recipes… and I NEVER cook to a recipe!!
This recipe was a good find for me also, because I want to eat more avocado, but I can’t stand the taste of it. Now I can get my nutrients and indulge my chocolate cravings all at once!
This looks so chocolatey and amazing! Perfect Valentine’s recipe!
yum yum! i have a chocolate protein shake too: http://thedelicateplace.com/2011/12/03/new-favourite-shake-leg-burner/ you’re right though, choco-covered strawberry is perfect for hearts day!
Lately as a treat I’ve been enjoying a chocolate cashew shake. It’s soooo yummmy and you actually inspired me to play around with the ingredients and my new Vitamix. yay! Here’s what’s in my “treat” chocolate smoothie:
1 cup homemade almond milk
a small handful of raw cashwews
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 Tbs raw cocoa powder
1 banana
3 ice cubes
Blend in blender until creamy and smooth (make sure cashews are blended in there and not still in small pieces). Then enjoy right away. It’s sooooo yummy!!
That sounds delicious!
Funny, I just sat down here to check FB sipping on a chocolate, banana, strawberry smoothie and then I see this post from you lol! Mine has no avocado and I used Kale instead of spinach though! I have yet to try avocado with chocolate, but I plan on it, I am seeing it a lot now with chocolate in different ways. I love avocado so I can only imagine it’s amazing!
WOW! This is delicious and my kids LOVED it, too! Thank you for a healthy Valentine treat!
Yum! Sounds soo good. I will try this tomorrow!
What are your thoughts on adding protein powder to smoothies? I love Aria, but am wondering what you think!
Thanks & Happy Vday
This will be the afternoon snacks for the kids for sure! I hope there is some left for me! I can’t wait to try it.
Thank you for this recipe! It’s fabulously delicious! I also added a scoop of raw vegan GF etc etc protein powder. Thanks again!!
The first time I ever put avocado into one of my green smoothies, my world changed.
Now, I almost always have avocado chopped and frozen alongside banana slices in my freezer. the difference it makes in texture is huge! Like eating ice cream, only I get glowy skin instead of a tummy ache. Win win!
I’ve never thought of freezing my avocado! Does it keep its green color or turn?
It does stays green because it doesn’t oxidize!
I had never really given that any thought! The best part by far however, is the cold creaminess it lends to my smoothies and raw puddings! Yum!
This was so yummy! A wonderful treat for Valentine’s day! I will be making it many more days to come. I love your blog, thanks so much for all of the great posts!
Hi, I’ve been looking at the Conscious cleanse and they are big on morning green smoothies. I have no blender now…but maybe soon. But their recipes seem SO MUCH and so much fruit…for example they say to drink one quart of green smoothie every morning….one example of a recipe is : 1 cup blueberies, 1 banana, 1 tbsp hemp seeds, greens, 1-2 cups of water…seems like SO MUCH fruit and a lot of water? Thoughts on if this is actually okay for a newbie? And I only will be able to buy a magic bullet which is kinda tiny…thoughts? Its’s all I can manage. ALso, amount of water? They say 1-2 cups…I don’t want gloopy thick…but I do like spoonable maybe…I like thin…but sometimes not thin cause it goes so quick…so your thoughts? I just worry about so much fruit in one sitting too …I mean If I just sat down and ate that many berries and bananas in only one sitting I’d be bloated and simply full of…sugar…ha…know what i mean? Anyway, thanks for your feedback!
That sounds like the average size of my smoothies! (As you can see, from the recipe above.) I’ve never worked with the Magic Bullet, so I couldn’t share any recommendations in that department.
Good luck!
Hey Jill, that’s the whole point of smooties. You wouldn’t be able to eat so much fruit by themselves but in smoothies you won’t even notice, and you alredy covered a lot of fruit and vegetables. And it will not be too sweet as all sugar is natural unless you have fructose intollerance or something. You can always reduce the water amount to your like.
Thanks for the reply. I think I just worry that that is still a lot of sugar. Sugar is sugar. And if someone eats a ton of fruit in one sitting, then it can raise and drop blood sugar levels, crashes, etc…I just wonder about the protein and the fat I guess.
Thoughts on protein powders? I actually have a 500 gram tub of lifetime basics vanilla pure plant protein…the ingredient list isn’t as clean as I wanted
It has fructose in it…and its 9 grams carbs, 3 grams fiber, 3 grams sugar, 1 gram “sugar alcohols” and 22 grams of protein…should have gotten a cleaner ingredient list for a powder, but this stuff was cheap. Not sure how or if that should be drank alone or in smoothie and how to alter liquids.
I like thick consistencies …but also like the easy down the throat smoothness of just down. I guess creamy and smooth and “cleansing” is the effect I’m looking for!!
I have never heard of the Conscious Cleanse specifically. However, I was on a completely raw diet at one time, for nearly a year, I still eat mostly raw anyways, but I needed yogurt back in my life!
Sometimes I will make a super monster of a smoothie and can’t finish it in one sitting. I just put it back in the fridge and finish it later, or if I only managed half of it I’ll freeze it for the next day to enjoy as a snack. Just like with any other nourishment, enjoy it when you’re hungry, but when your tummy says “enough”, stop.
This looks delicious! I am wondering if I could put leftovers in the fridge and enjoy it the next morning. Or would the taste/look change when refridgerated?
I’ve actually never not finished a smoothie, so I have no idea what it will look like! I assume it would be fine, but maybe not as icy in texture.
Megan, do you know what the nutritional info is for this smoothie? Looks delicious!

Wow this sounds like an amazing combo and right up may alley with my chocolate love affair! For your readers who are looking to invest in a blender I’m hosting a giveaway for a brand new HealthMaster Elite Blender which is comparable to the Vitamix!
This shake was sooooo good! I just made it for myself and my husband. It really does taste like a chocolate covered strawberry! What a nice little treat! (also, I had no vanilla so I made it without and it still tastes really good!) Thank you for your blog. I’ve been finding out so many wonderful recipes of things I can actually eat!
