If you’re looking for an alternative to soda, I’ve got the perfect solution for you.

glass of sugar-free gingerade with a straw and a slice of lime Gingerade! This cool and refreshing drink is a cross between ginger ale and lemon-lime flavored Gatorade.

Bursting with fresh lemon and lime juice, and sweetened with stevia, this drink is actually good for you. Citrus fruits are loaded with vitamins A, C and potassium, plus, they have an alkalizing effect on the body–> which improves digestion, and may discourage the formation of kidney stones. Ginger is also beneficial in aiding digestion, and has been proven to have anti-inflammatory properties. Because this drink has no added sugar, it will also have virtually no impact on your blood sugar levels. Feel free to enjoy it anytime you like!

This recipe is courtesy of my friend, Matt. He makes this drink daily, and was kind enough to share it with us!

(You’ll see his hands demonstrating the process below.)

Sugar-Free Gingerade
serves 1

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon fresh ginger juice (or more, to taste)
1 cup sparkling water, or still
1 packet white stevia, or 8 drops liquid stevia

Directions:

The trick to making this drink is juicing the fresh ginger.

There are a few ways to juice ginger, but we decided that this ceramic grater was the easiest way to do it, without wasting a drop of juice!

a ceramic grater with lemons and limes next to it

You simply peel the fresh ginger, and run it back and forth over the ceramic grater.

grating ginger on the ceramic graterWhen there’s only a bit of pulp left in your hands, squeeze out the extra juice, then pour it all through a mesh strainer positioned over a bowl– saving the juice, then discarding the pulp.

(Unless, by some chance, you have a use for dry ginger pulp…)

juicing a lemon and puring it into a glass

Next, juice your lemons and limes, then measure out a teaspoon of each juice, combining them in a glass with a packet of NuNaturals stevia. (Liquid stevia works great, too!)

Pour one cup of sparkling water over the mixture, and stir well. Adjust flavors to taste, if necessary.

(My friend, Matt, likes a LOT of ginger. Austin, not so much…)

Notes

*Note: I don't recommend drinking carbonated water on a regular basis, as carbonated gas (which is added to the water) has been linked to dental erosion and calcium loss. If you are weaning yourself off regular or diet soda, this is a great transition option! However, if you'd like to make this drink even healthier, skip the carbonated water and use still water instead.

  1. Late addition, but this is a quick and easy shortcut since I like this on a daily basis: I use bottled ginger juice concentrate (don’t know if I can name the manufacturer here, but I’ll try–The Ginger People). It tastes almost as good as fresh, but doesn’t deter me from making it more often. I’ve also added a little cranberry juice or cherry juice just to give it some nice color and added flavor/nutrients. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I crush my ginger in my garlic press. It gives some juice and then I keep the pressed piece of ginger to put in the bottom of my glass when I have “gingerade” Gives the drink a little more ginger flavor!

  3. Could I use the same juicer I use for my daily green juice? Ginger is always a must-add for my green juice! I don’t have the ceramic grater, and this sounds delish. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Yummy! I drink cranberry concentrate with a dash of stevia now and then. Absolutely glorious! Cranberry concentrate is so expensive thougj, so recently I’ve been substituting lemon juice

  5. Looks and sounds delicious! I haven’t drank pop for 2 1/2 years, so I’ll use still water when I make this for myself, but if I occasionally make it with the sparkling water, my kids will think they are getting a real treat (since I don’t let them have pop either, unless they get it from Grandma and Grandpa which is another long story)…my favorite sweet drink is homemade lemonade. I just use fresh lemon juice, water and stevia. Amazing and refreshing. I’m trying to figure out how I can get the fresh ginger juice…maybe I’ll try putting it in my garlic press or using my microplane grater…

  6. this sounds so good! i feel like i would love it for cocktails, so just a splash of something hard would make it perfect 😉
