The next time you need a blue drink, try this easy blue smoothie. It’s made with simple ingredients, like frozen pineapple and your favorite milk, plus a special ingredient that turns it bright blue. (Hint: It’s spirulina.)

While blue spirulina is not a common pantry ingredient, it can come in handy if you’re making homemade 4th of July Popsicles or a Blue Milk recipe for a Star Wars-themed birthday party.

That’s exactly why we have it in our house, so I thought I’d put it to good use with this smoothie recipe!

Blue Spirulina Smoothie Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make a bright blue smoothie:

Frozen Pineapple. While you can use any frozen fruit to make a smoothie, pineapple is light in color, so the bright blue color can shine through. It also tastes delicious, with both a sweet and tangy flavor.

Frozen Banana. This adds creaminess and sweetness. If you don’t have frozen bananas on hand, you can use fresh ones, but reduce the liquid by 1/4 cup in that case.

Milk of choice. I use soy milk in my smoothies for plant-based protein, but any unsweetened milk you love will work here. I love how it adds creaminess.

Orange Juice. This helps boost the overall flavor, giving the smoothie a tropical taste. If you prefer a lower-sugar drink, use more milk instead. (But the smoothie will taste more bland.)

Blue Spirulina. This secret ingredient is a powdered algae that turns your smoothie bright blue. Use a whole teaspoon for the most vibrant color. You can’t taste it with this smoothie combination!

How to Make a Blue Smoothie

Step 1:

Add the frozen pineapple, banana, milk, orange juice, and blue spirulina powder to a high-speed blender. Secure the lid and blend for 60 seconds, or until the smoothie is smooth and creamy.

Stop and scrape down the sides of the machine as needed to ensure the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 2:

Taste the smoothie and make any necessary adjustments. (For example, you can add more milk if you think it’s too thick, or you can add a little more frozen fruit if you’d like it to be thicker.)

Once you’re satisfied with the flavor, pour it into a serving glass and enjoy it immediately for the best taste and texture.

Blue Smoothie FAQs

Where do you buy blue spirulina powder for smoothies?

I purchase blue spirulina on Amazon (affiliate link). The pouch is not very large, but you only need a teaspoon or less for every recipe you make, so it should last a while!

Does anything else naturally turn food blue?

Butterfly pea tea is another naturally blue option, if you’d like to experiment with it. In my experience, frozen blueberries turn smoothies purple, so I don’t recommend using those for a blue recipe.

It’s not often that you can make something bright blue without using artificial food coloring, but that’s exactly what we’re doing with this blue smoothie recipe. It’s naturally blue and tastes like a tropical drink!

Notes

Nutrition information is for the whole batch. This calculation is based on generic ingredients, so it is an estimate, not a guarantee.
Variation: I also tested adding blue spirulina to my Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie recipe. If you prefer a lower-sugar drink, that worked as well. (But my kids didn’t like it as much as this one.)
Vegan Note: This recipe is dairy-free and vegan when you use a non-dairy milk, like soy milk. (That’s what I tested this recipe with.) Almond milk, hemp milk, or oat milk will also work.
