Today I’m sharing a quick and easy recipe for making your own Cajun seasoning at home.Homemade Cajun seasoning

I don’t usually work with spice mixes like this, but I wanted to try my hand at making a Cajun-style pasta, and every recipe I found called for “Cajun seasoning.” Rather than buying a store-bought bottle of specialty seasoning for just one dish, I decided to use the ingredients I already had in my spice rack to come up with this quick and convenient homemade version.

Homemade Cajun Seasoning
Makes about 3 tablespoons

Adapted from All Recipes

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon sea salt
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Directions:

Combine all of the ingredients in a small jar and shake well to mix. Store in an airtight container at room temperature with the rest of your spices.

 Notes:

  • The great thing about making your own spice mix at home is that you can customize the flavors however you like. If you don’t like spicy dishes, reduce the cayenne and omit the red pepper flakes. If you prefer a saltier mix, add more salt. You’re in charge, so feel free to adjust any seasonings as needed!

  2. I make all my spice mixes homemade cause the stuff in the store has too many preservatives, dyes artificial flavors and salt. I’ve made taco, Cajun, lemon pepper, Italian mix, and flavors sugar such as lavender vanilla coconut sugar. I don’t add salt to mixes because I want to taste the food I will add after cooking is done.

  3. I love this idea, thank you! In a sense, I make my own seasoning mixes constantly by tossing in a whole variety of spices together as I cook. But I’ve never done it so intentionally and lastingly as you’ve done here, by combining it in a jar and having some left-over. I know chefs do that constantly, but it helped to see you make it so approachable! As the chefs in videos always toast whole spices and then freshly grind them with apparatus I don’t have. Yay, I can do this :0), & I intend to replace at least some of the regular paprika with smoked! This will be fun!

  4. I love Cajun seasoning! It’s great for marinating chicken or fish, with sweet potato and adds a little something to homemade hummus. My supermarker stocks a salt free version that I have yet to try.

  5. I always used to buy Tony’s Cajun seasoning, but it has a crazy amount of sodium! This looks at least a million times better, and much cheaper!
