I love finding ways to make colorful recipes without artificial food dyes. Whether you need bright purple frosting or red, white, and blue popsicles, I’ve figured out a way to make it happen.

That’s why I’m excited to share this Blue Milk recipe, especially for anyone who is a Star Wars fan. It’s inspired by the drink served at Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland, and it has a fruity, refreshing flavor without added refined sugar.

If you plan on hosting a Smurfs-themed party, or any other event where you might want to serve a blue drink, this recipe could work for many fun ideas!

Star Wars Blue Milk Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this drink at home:

  • White grape juice. This 100% juice is the base of the drink, adding sweetness without an overwhelming flavor. You could likely use apple juice if you prefer.
  • Milk. I used unsweetened soy milk, plus coconut milk, when testing this recipe. The version at Disneyland reportedly uses a combination of rice milk and coconut milk for their drink, so use plant-based milk to keep this recipe vegan and dairy-free. With that being said, any milk you enjoy should work for this recipe.
  • Coconut Milk. Use canned coconut milk for the creamiest texture and flavor. When working with coconut milk from a can, it’s best to blend it briefly before measuring. That way the cream will be emulsified into the liquid. (If you find your coconut milk is lumpy in the blender, secure the lid and blend longer! After 60 to 90 seconds, it should look smoother.)
  • Pineapple. This addition provides a tropical flavor that complements the hint of coconut. When you use a high-speed blender, the fruit is totally pulverized, so you won’t need to strain it. I’ve only tested this recipe with fresh pineapple, but I imagine frozen pineapple might work as well.
  • Blue Spirulina. This is what we use to add a bright blue color, without artificial food dye. Just a 1/2 teaspoon adds a vibrant blue hue to the whole batch!

How to Make Blue Milk

Step 1:

Add the pineapple chunks, white grape juice, milk, coconut milk, and blue spirulina to a high-speed blender. Secure the lid and blend until the mixture appears bright blue and creamy, with no visible pieces of pineapple.

Step 2:

The blue milk is ready to serve right away. Pour it over glasses of ice, and it’s ready to enjoy chilled. I recommend serving this with a straw for stirring and sipping.

The blue milk can separate as it sits in the glass, but it will return to its creamy blue color when stirred.

Note: If you’re concerned that your blender didn’t pulverize the pineapple, you can strain the drink through a fine mesh strainer as it’s being poured into the glass. That will catch any remaining pineapple seeds that might have been missed.

Storage Tips

Leftover blue milk can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. It will separate when stored, so shake well before serving again.

Blue Milk Star Wars FAQs

What does blue milk taste like?

The blue milk served at Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland reportedly features flavors of pineapple, lime, dragonfruit, and watermelon, with a base of rice milk and coconut milk. This DIY Blue Milk recipe is based on that, so it has a lightly fruity, creamy consistency with flavor notes of pineapple and a hint of coconut. (Without being overwhelming.)

Do I have to include coconut milk?

When you make this blue milk at home, you can use any ingredients you like! I do enjoy the hint of coconut flavor in this recipe, but you can omit it if you’re not a fan.

Will anything else turn the milk blue?

Other than using food dye, I’m not aware of other ingredients that can turn a drink bright blue. Frozen blueberries will turn the drink purple, if you don’t mind a different color.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups 100% white grape juice
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • ¼ cup full-fat coconut milk (see notes)
  • 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks
  • ½ teaspoon blue spirulina

Instructions

  • In a high-speed blender, add the white grape juice, milk, coconut milk, pineapple, and blue spirulina powder. Secure the lid and blend until the mixture looks smooth and creamy. (And bright blue!)
  • Pour the blue milk over ice, and it's ready to serve right away. I recommend serving this with a straw for stirring and sipping, as the blue milk can separate if left to sit for too long.

Notes

Nutrition information is for 1 of 6 servings, or approximately 2/3 cup. (Assuming you get 4 cups total from this recipe.) This information is automatically calculated, so it’s just an estimate and not a guarantee.
Coconut Milk Note: I recommend blending the can of coconut milk before measuring it for this recipe. Some cans will have a lumpy texture at first, as the cream and liquid separate, so blend it for 60 to 90 seconds, or until the milk looks smooth and creamy. (There should be no lumps floating on top; if there are, blend the milk longer.)
Milk of Choice: I tested this recipe with unsweetened soy milk, but Disneyland’s version is reportedly made with rice milk. Feel free to use any plant-based milk you enjoy for a dairy-free recipe that’s vegan-friendly. Or use cow’s milk if you don’t need a dairy-free recipe.
Straining (Optional): If you don’t think your blender fully pulverized the pineapple, you can pour the milk through a fine mesh strainer to catch any pieces of pineapple that might have been missed. There shouldn’t be much!
Blue Spirulina: I buy blue spirulina on Amazon. (Affiliate link) This small bag will likely last a long time, so you can use it to make Red, White, and Blue Popsicles, blue smoothies, or use it as a natural food dye for frosting in the future.
