The next time you need a blue drink, try this easy blue smoothie. It’s made with simple ingredients, like frozen pineapple and your favorite milk, plus a special ingredient that turns it bright blue. (Hint: It’s spirulina.)
While blue spirulina is not a common pantry ingredient, it can come in handy if you’re making homemade 4th of July Popsicles or a Blue Milk recipe for a Star Wars-themed birthday party.
That’s exactly why we have it in our house, so I thought I’d put it to good use with this smoothie recipe!
Blue Spirulina Smoothie Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make a bright blue smoothie:
Frozen Pineapple. While you can use any frozen fruit to make a smoothie, pineapple is light in color, so the bright blue color can shine through. It also tastes delicious, with both a sweet and tangy flavor.
Frozen Banana. This adds creaminess and sweetness. If you don’t have frozen bananas on hand, you can use fresh ones, but reduce the liquid by 1/4 cup in that case.
Milk of choice. I use soy milk in my smoothies for plant-based protein, but any unsweetened milk you love will work here. I love how it adds creaminess.
Orange Juice. This helps boost the overall flavor, giving the smoothie a tropical taste. If you prefer a lower-sugar drink, use more milk instead. (But the smoothie will taste more bland.)
Blue Spirulina. This secret ingredient is a powdered algae that turns your smoothie bright blue. Use a whole teaspoon for the most vibrant color. You can’t taste it with this smoothie combination!
How to Make a Blue Smoothie
Step 1:
Add the frozen pineapple, banana, milk, orange juice, and blue spirulina powder to a high-speed blender. Secure the lid and blend for 60 seconds, or until the smoothie is smooth and creamy.
Stop and scrape down the sides of the machine as needed to ensure the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Step 2:
Taste the smoothie and make any necessary adjustments. (For example, you can add more milk if you think it’s too thick, or you can add a little more frozen fruit if you’d like it to be thicker.)
Once you’re satisfied with the flavor, pour it into a serving glass and enjoy it immediately for the best taste and texture.
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
- ½ frozen banana , cut into slices
- ½ cup milk of choice
- ½ cup orange juice
- 1 teaspoon blue spirulina
Instructions
- Add the pineapple, banana, milk, orange juice, and blue spirulina to a high-speed blender. Secure the lid and blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Taste the mixture and make any necessary adjustments. You can add more milk for a thinner consistency, or a little ice for a thicker texture. When you're satisfied with the flavor and texture, serve it immediately.
