When you hear the term “detox” smoothie, you might assume it’s going to be something you have to plug your nose to drink. Luckily, that’s not the case here! I’ve spent weeks working on this detox smoothie recipe, adding as many plants as possible, so it’s actually delicious and loaded with nutrients.

No expensive supplements or powders are required!

In fact, I recently revisited this recipe to see if I could add even more fiber, in the form of celery and chia seeds. I’m not one to eat a raw celery stick as a snack (no, thank you) so I hope you’ll trust me when I say this tastes amazing… even with the celery added in. The resulting drink now has 12 grams of fiber per glass, and when you use orange juice as the base, it tastes like you might have bought it from a professional smoothie shop.

What makes this a “detox” smoothie?

As you may know, your body already has everything it needs, so you don’t need to do a drastic detox diet. In my experience, a drastic approach can lead to binge eating rather than developing healthy habits you can stick to.

You can support your body’s natural detoxification process by consistently incorporating more whole foods into your diet and reducing your consumption of processed foods containing artificial coloring, flavors, and other artificial ingredients.

This green smoothie will help you do just that. Enjoy it for breakfast, or share it as a snack for an easy nutrient boost.

Detox Smoothie Ingredients

  • Green Apple: This study shows that eating an apple a day may be almost as effective as taking a statin in reducing the risk of heart disease.
  • Pineapple: Rich in antioxidants, this tropical fruit also contains bromelain, a protein-digesting enzyme. I’ve tested this recipe with both fresh and frozen pineapple, so either will work here.
  • Banana: A great source of potassium, eating bananas may help lower the risk of chronic kidney disease, according to a 2019 study
  • Ginger: Ginger is considered to have anti-inflammatory effects in the body and may help to lower fasting blood sugar levels.
  • Spinach: This leafy green has a neutral flavor when added to a smoothie, and this study suggests it may help prevent oxidative damage in the body.
  • Cilantro: This fresh herb contains a compound called dodecanal, which has been shown to have antibacterial effects against Salmonella. Parsley can be used as a swap if you prefer!
  • Fresh Lemon or Lime: These are a great source of vitamin C, which has been shown to increase white blood cell production in test-tube studies.
  • Orange Juice. I highly recommend using this as the liquid if you want this smoothie to taste sweet and delicious the first time you make it. It adds vitamin C and considerably improves the flavor.

How to Make a Detox Smoothie

Step 1:

Slice 1 green apple into chunks, removing the core, seeds, and stem. Chop a celery rib, too, if you want to add that in. (As a celery hater, I can’t taste it in this smoothie when I use orange juice as the base.)

Add that to a high-speed blender, along with 1/2 cup of orange juice (or water), 1 cup of baby spinach, 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen pineapple chunks, 1/2 cup of frozen banana, 1/2 inch of fresh ginger, a small handful of cilantro, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

I'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

Note: Lemon and lime juice can be used interchangeably in this recipe. Use whatever you have on hand! I find lemons easier to juice, so I use them more often.

Step 2:

Secure the lid on your blender and blend until smooth, about 60 seconds. There should be no visible chunks of fruit or greens. If you’d like a slightly slushier texture, you can add a handful of ice cubes and blend again. Don’t add too much ice, or the flavor will be diluted.

Pour the smoothie into a glass immediately and serve. It has the best taste and texture right away.

Storage Tip: If you have leftover smoothie, store it in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Smoothies will separate when stored, so be sure to shake them well before serving again. You can also freeze leftovers in a popsicle mold for a frozen, nutrient-dense treat later!

Detox Smoothie RECIPE FAQs

Will this smoothie help you lose weight?

Since this detox smoothie is loaded with nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, it could easily fit into a reasonable calorie-deficient plan. The pectin in apples and the fiber in these ingredients will help keep you full.

Can I change the flavor?

Yes, of course! When you make your smoothie, you control its taste. Add almond butter for added creaminess, or a dash of cinnamon, cayenne, or turmeric for extra spice. For more inspiration, you can also browse my other smoothie recipes

This detox smoothie recipe is the one I turn to when I want to feel less bloated and reduce sugar cravings, without relying on a gimmicky supplement. I spent weeks figuring out the best ingredient ratio so it tastes good while still sneaking in some ingredients you might not otherwise consume—like celery, fresh cilantro, and ginger. Once you taste this, don't be surprised if you crave it every week! It has a whopping 12 grams of fiber per glass.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup water (or orange juice)
  • 1 green apple , stem and seeds removed
  • ½ cup pineapple chunks (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ frozen banana
  • ½ inch fresh ginger , peeled and minced
  • 1 cup fresh spinach
  • 1 celery rib , cut into chunks (no leafy greens)
  • small handful fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds (or ground flax)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (or lime)

Instructions

  • In a high-speed blender, combine the water (or orange juice), green apple chunks, pineapple, banana, ginger, spinach, celery, cilantro, chia seeds, and fresh lemon juice. Secure the lid and blend until smooth, about 60 seconds. Stop and scrape down the sides of the blender, if needed.
  • If you don't have a high-speed blender, blend the orange juice, chia seeds, spinach, cilantro, and ginger first to help break them down completely. Then add in the fruit and lime juice, and blend again.
  • Taste the smoothie, and if you want a slushier texture, add a small handful of ice cubes. Secure the lid and blend again. (This is optional; don't add too much ice or the flavor will be diluted.) Pour the smoothie into a glass and enjoy it right away.

  1. I’m drinking it now, it’s really tasty and refreshing I used orange juice rather than water. I will have one of these smoothies each morning for the next 3-4 weeks. Thanks so much! I really recommend it based on the goodness the author cited, and the taste!

  2. My daughter has a skin condition. She is alergic to anything modified especially food with corn in it . Her skin breaks out into a rash. No medication seems to help, we have been to sick kids hospital and she was giving creams and pills. Nothing works. I make her this smoothie and her skin clears up in 2 days. I shared this information with the dermatologists and she looked at me like i have a tin foil hat on. Thank you Good Lord for giving us these natural ingredients and thank you for this recipe.

  3. Drinking this right now, and it is delicious! Perfectly balanced. Sweet, grassy, and tangy with a hint of spice from the ginger. I used parsley and added a scoop of unflavored collagen powder. Otherwise exactly as listed. Love it. Thank you!

  4. I tried this and it was pretty good. I didn’t have any cilantro as the grocery store was out. I will be doing this beverage again.
