If you’re trying to eat an apple a day, you’ll want to try this easy apple smoothie. It’s naturally sweetened with fruit (so you won’t need an added sweetener), and it tastes like Fall, with warming notes of cinnamon.

There’s minimal prep work involved, so you could be drinking this in no time. Be sure to add more apples to your grocery shopping list, as this is one you’ll want to repeat often.

“Fantastic! Was honestly not expecting it to taste this good… I have 4 teenagers who like apples but won’t eat them if there is the slightest imperfection, meaning I am constantly eating imperfect apples… Well, now I have a solution!” -Dad

Apple Smoothie Recipe Ingredients

  • Apple. This is the perfect way to put an imperfect apple to good use! Use one that is on the larger side for maximum flavor. The sweetest options are Fuji, Gala, and Honeycrisp (the latter is my personal favorite).
  • Frozen banana. If you keep frozen bananas on hand, you’ll need half of one for this recipe. I like to slice it into small pieces so they are easily pulverized in the blender.
  • Peanut Butter. This adds creaminess and a hint of flavor. It pairs perfectly with apple and banana in a smoothie, but you could also use almond butter or sunflower seed butter.
  • Milk. If you need a dairy-free recipe, use a plant-based milk. (I like soy milk for extra protein.) But any milk will work in this recipe.
  • Ground Flax Seeds. This adds extra fiber, thickens the texture, and makes the smoothie more filling. However, if you don’t have these on hand, it’s not a deal-breaker.
  • Cinnamon. A touch of cinnamon pairs perfectly with the fresh apple flavor, making this smoothie taste like Fall.

I also add ice to this smoothie to help add a slushy texture and distract from all the fiber that the apple adds. (Don’t use too much ice, or it will dilute the flavor.)

How to Make an Apple Smoothie

Step 1:

Cut the apple into chunks and discard the core with the seeds.

Add the apple chunks to a high-speed blender, along with the milk, frozen banana, ground flax seeds, peanut butter, and cinnamon.

Step 2:

Secure the lid on the blender and blend until the mixture looks smooth and creamy. Make you blend long enough that the apple skins are pulverized. The smoothie should appear slightly thick, but with no visible chunks of apple skin.

Add the ice for a slushy texture (this hides the fibrous texture of the apple), then secure the lid and blend again. When there are no chunks of ice remaining, the smoothie is ready to serve right away.

Note: Be careful not to add too much ice, or it could dilute the flavor of your smoothie. You want to add just enough to hide the apple texture, but not so much that it becomes bland.

Apple Smoothie FAQs

Can you put a whole apple in a smoothie?

There’s no need to peel the apple for this recipe, but you should cut away the core and seeds. Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide when it comes into contact with the digestive enzymes in our bodies.

Which apples are best for smoothies?

I think sweet apples work best for this smoothie, like Gala, Fuji, and Honeycrisp. However, you can use any apple you have on hand. (The larger the better!) Green apples will provide a more tart, tangy flavor instead of a sweet one.

Can you freeze apples for smoothies?

Yes, here’s how to freeze apples. You can use a frozen apple in this smoothie instead of the ice cubes, but you may need to add more liquid—up to 1 cup—as well. (This could dilute the flavor slightly.)

The next time you have a bruised or imperfect apple, turn it into this delicious apple smoothie! It has a creamy, slushy texture and tastes like Fall in a cup. Every time I make it, I wish I had doubled the recipe, because my kids want to share.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium apple
  • ½ frozen banana
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
  • 1 heaping tablespoon peanut butter
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup soy milk (or milk of choice)
  • 1 cup ice cubes , about 4-5 large cubes

Instructions

  • In a high-speed blender, combine the apple, banana, flax, peanut butter, cinnamon, and milk. Blend until smooth, stopping to scrape down the blender as needed. The apple should become liquified, which will add more "liquid" to the mix, but if you need to add extra liquid, you can start by adding 2 tablespoons at a time.
  • Once the mixture is totally smooth, add in the ice and blend again until a slushy texture is achieved. Serve right away for the best texture and flavor. (Don't add too much extra ice, or it could dilute the flavor.)

Notes

Nutrition information is for the whole batch using unsweetened soy milk, and is just an estimate, not a guarantee.
Banana Alternative: I don’t think you can taste the banana much in this smoothie, but you can swap it for two pitted Medjool dates if you prefer. In that case, you may need to blend longer to ensure they are pulverized.

  1. This is an awesome way to get in an apple a day. I love that the apple does not need to be peeled since a lot of nutrition is in the peel. I used more unsweetened almond milk to make the smoothie thinner, almond butter instead of peanut butter (I’m trying to get in more almond, too, for their nutrition), I added ground cardamom, ground cloves, and ground ginger, and I nixed adding ice at the end. Wow! This really exceeded my expectations.

  2. Wow, delicious. I put in extra cinnamon because it’s my life. I might dial back the pb to a level Tbsp mine is competing with the apple. But this is a smoothie I’ll chug frequently. I used frozen apple and banana chunks, so upped to 1 cup of almond milk, and just needed a splash of water during the onslaught to get the blades whirring again. I have to say, I was a little worried about the frozen apple, mostly because of the peel. My blender is a second-hand Osterizer, and it took about 5 minutes of minimal movement and a little tinkering before absolute freedom, but it worked just fine!

  3. Added almond butter and a little more almond milk. Also I added 1/2 banana not frozen, no time for freezing…..loved this

  4. Yummy! I made this with oat milk and instead of peanut butter I used Justin’s maple almond butter. So good!
I didn’t use ice but probably will next time for better texture.
    Thank you!

  5. What an amazing treat! Who needs icecream? This is delicious. I never knew how much I loved frozen apples! I don’t think I could ever put an un-frozen apple in a smoothie ever again.

  6. What a perfect smoothie! I added spinach and zucchini without a noticeable difference in taste… this recipe is a gem.
