If you find yourself with too many fresh strawberries on hand, freezing them is a great way to make them last longer. Frozen strawberries are one of my favorite smoothie ingredients! You’ll find all of my tips and tricks for how to freeze strawberries below.

Should Strawberries Be Washed Before Freezing?

I do recommend that you wash fresh strawberries before you freeze them, because it’s unlikely you’ll wash them after they are frozen. At a minimum, I like to rinse them well and pat dry, but you can also soak your strawberries in a solution of water and vinegar.

To make a soaking solution, combine 2 1/2 cups of water with 1/2 cup of vinegar and soak the strawberries for several minutes. This should help to get rid of any bacteria or mold that might make your strawberries spoil faster, and the diluted vinegar won’t affect their flavor. Be sure to drain them and pat dry.

How to Remove Strawberry Hulls

Now that you have clean strawberries, you’ll want to remove their hulls. I do this quickly by simply slicing off the top, which is fast and efficient.

If you want to avoid cutting off any more of the red strawberry than you have to, you can also use a paring knife to dig-out only the green leaves in the center. This method can be slightly more time-consuming, but you do get a little more of the strawberry that way, too.

The Best Way to Freeze Strawberries

Once the hulls are removed, you can choose to freeze the strawberries whole or cut in half. I like to cut them in half, so it will be easier for a blender to break them down in a smoothie later. If you have a powerful blender, you can save yourself a few minutes and just freeze them whole, instead.

I like to freeze strawberries in a single layer on a baking sheet, so that they won’t freeze together in one big clump. This will make them easier to use later, when you want to measure out the frozen strawberries for a Strawberry Banana Smoothie.

Line the baking sheet with parchment paper, so the berries won’t stick to the pan, then let them freeze for 2 hours or so. Once the strawberries are frozen solid, you can transfer them to an airtight container or storage bag. This will help prevent freezer burn, and you won’t have to keep them on a big, bulky sheet pan to save on freezer space.

How Long Can You Freeze Strawberries?

Frozen strawberries should last in your freezer for up to 6 months when stored in an airtight container. (I use reusable silicone bags to store them.) I go through strawberries pretty fast, though, so we usually use them up long before then!

Can You Freeze Strawberries and then Thaw Them?

When you freeze a hydrating fruit like strawberries, you can definitely thaw them as needed, but keep in mind that they won’t be as firm in texture as they are when they are fresh. The freezing process makes water expand, and that bursts the cell structure of the strawberries. So, when they thaw they are mushy. (But still delicious and nutritious!)

Thawed frozen strawberries are best used in cooked recipes, like a pie, berry crisp, chia seed jam, or as a pancake or waffle topping.

How to Freeze Strawberries

Here's how to freeze strawberries, before the fresh ones you have on hand spoil. They make a great smoothie ingredient, and are also perfect for making jams and desserts.

  • 1 pound fresh strawberries


  • Rinse the strawberries to remove and dirt, and pat them dry with a towel. Slice the hulls (green leaves) off the top with a knife. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • You can freeze strawberries whole, or sliced in half. I like to slice them in half so that they will blend easier in smoothies later. Arrange the strawberries in a single layer on the lined baking sheet. (I arrange them cut-side down.)
  • Place the pan of strawberries in a freezer to freeze until firm, at least 2 hours. Once the strawberries are frozen solid, you can transfer them to an airtight storage bag or container with a lid. They will be individually frozen, rather than stuck in a big clump, so they will be easy to measure for recipes later!
  • Frozen strawberries can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months. (Possibly even longer, but they may start to lose their flavor.)


You can use this method for freezing any other berries, too! You won't need to cut raspberries or blueberries in half before freezing, so the process is even faster.

  1. Please stop linking to Amazon posted products. They are a Monopoly and linking users to their site only makes them stronger against struggling brick-and-mortar companies striving to get back in the fight. Personally, I suggest linking directly to the product manufacturer website (also try not to link Amazon products unless they are actually the best product which is unlikely). Amazon literally steals their sellers data in order to compete with them directly and squeeze them out of the market. That is why they are so successful. We all need to learn that Amazon and Walmart controlling 99% of all eCommerce won’t end well for anyone. How would you feel if Amazon only catered to Martha Stuart? I get it if they cut you a %profit but maybe reach out directly to the manufacturer for advertising and show them your viewer support. Thanks for the work you do.

    1. Yes, if you do that I would recommend pouring the mixture in an ice cube tray to freeze, so it’s easy to portion out later!

      1. You might want to change the printable recipe to include the most important part — soaking them in a vinegar solution!

  2. You can definitely leave the leaves on, especially if you’re planning to put them in smoothies. The leaves have extra micronutrients that do not detract at all from the flavor of the smoothie. I often throw freshly rinsed whole organic strawberries Into the vitamix when making smoothies.

  3. Thank you for posting about this in your Instagram stories the other day. I don’t know why I didn’t think to freeze my own strawberries. It’s been so hard to find frozen ones lately! Do you like those silicone bags? I’ve been eyeing them, but they are more expensive than I’d like, so I want to make sure they are worth it!

    1. I do like the silicone bags, but I agree they are expensive! Sometimes I just use glass containers, too, but the bags have been handy for squeezing more storage space into my freezer lately.
