Vegan Frozen Chai Latte

It’s the season for sweet frozen drinks, and this frozen chia latte is one of the best things I’ve ever tasted– healthy or not!

It’s bursting with the spices I love, including cinnamon and ginger, and it’s naturally sweetened with fiber-rich dates, so it won’t spike your blood sugar the way a drink from your favorite coffee chain might. Plus, it’s cheaper!

Rather than relying on almond milk for creaminess, this frozen beverage is loaded with chia seeds and hemp hearts which not only add a creamy texture but also boost the protein content. Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids we need, making them a complete source of protein, and when paired with chia seeds, this drink also packs a hefty punch of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. The combination is so unbelievably creamy, my husband couldn’t believe that I didn’t use milk!

As you may know, I’ve been on a chocolate “milkshake” kick for the past few months, but I think this spicy shake might be my new favorite. That’s saying something!

Vegan Frozen Chai Latte
Serves 1

Ingredients:

1 cup water
2 tablespoons chia seeds
1 tablespoon hemp hearts
2 to 3 Medjool dates, pitted
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
2 to 3 handfuls of ice cubes (8-12 cubes)

Directions:

Combine everything, except for the ice, in a high-speed blender and blend until completely smooth. Taste the mixture and adjust the flavor to taste, if necessary. (Keep in mind that the ice will dilute the flavor slightly.) Add in the ice and blend again until a slushy-like texture is achieved. Serve immediately.

  • 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
  • 2 to 3 Medjool dates , pitted
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 to 3 handfuls of ice cubes (8-12 cubes)
Instructions
  1. Combine everything, except for the ice, in a high-speed blender and blend until completely smooth. Taste the mixture and adjust the flavor to taste, if necessary. (Keep in mind that the ice will dilute the flavor slightly.)
  2. Add in the ice and blend again until a slushy-like texture is achieved. Serve immediately.

Note: If you don’t have a high-speed blender like the Vitamix, soak the first four ingredients together for at least 20 minutes before blending this shake. The soaked chia seeds and dates will break down much easier this way!

AMAZING! So Yummy!

Jen

Lovely! I have made before, but today I brewed some chai tea and then froze in icecube trays. Then followed the recipe exactly using the tea cubes. Amazing!! I only drink caffeine every great once in a while, and using in chai form, so this is perfect! Delicious, filling and just wonderful. Thank you!

Christine

I added spinach and kale to mine and it was bitter. I would not recommend it. Opps! lol.

Let me clarify, I would not recommend adding kale and spinach. I would recommend anything Megan makes.

Meagan

Yum! I think I will be making this a lot during the summer. I love chai and this cool drink hits the spot and is nutritionally so much healthier than a coffee stand drink.

Hello Megan,

I’m new to your site but so far I really like I’m reading and decided to order your recipe book, can’t wait to receive it!

I can’t wait to try your Vegan Frozen Chai Latte; although, hot Chai is my favorite drink I’m intolerant to Soy and it seems to be the only way I really enjoy my Chai Latte because it makes it so creamy!

Do you have any “healthy” alternatives for a hot Soy Chai Latte?

I look forward to hearing from you and to receiving your book so I can try the recipes.

Thank you.

I made this for breakfast today and it was delicious. The tip for me was to let it soak for 20mins. with my regular blender. Loved it. So tasty and more creamy than I though it’d be. And filling, which is just what I needed this morning. Thank you! Love your new website too.

This was really really good…I substituted coconut butter for the hemp hearts since I didn’t have any and it was delish…thanks!

Love this smoothie! I add Metagenics protein powders as part of my daily dietary requirements along with a Tablespoon cacao powder. I make with home made almond milk. This is a filling meal that keeps me satisfied for hours.
