Healthy People Don’t Get Sick

Coming off a full month of drinking fresh vegetable juices until dinner, keeping active, and eating more than my fair-share of vegetables, you’d think I’d be the poster-child of perfect health.

I feel like I’m always hearing that “healthy people don’t get sick,” and I’ll admit–> I was feeling pretty immune while everyone around us has been catching a nasty flu-like bug that’s been going around.

Until I woke up on Thursday morning with a sore throat.

Followed by a crashing headache.

And quite a fever.

Dang it!!

Of course, I do feel like this cold/flu could be a lot worse than it has been for me. I was knocked out for a good 24 hours with a killer headache, chills, and a fever… but I’m already feeling better. This is a HUGE difference from my previous experience with the flu, which has been known to keep me down for well over a week! Sure, it could just be a different type of virus. But, I’d like to think my healthy habits have something to do with my quick recovery, so let’s just play along, okay?

Here are a few things I did, hoping they’d help me recover faster:

Took 1 Tablespoon Sonne’s #7 each morning.(I’m convinced this stuff is a miracle worker)

Sipped on copious amounts of fresh lemon, ginger and honey tea.

Drank a glass of Natural Calm each evening.

Soaked in an epsom salt bath.

LOTS of rest!!! Seriously, I slept for most of the day on Thursday, and half the day on Friday. The more rest, the better!

I didn’t take any over-the-counter medication. I was seriously temped to take some Ibuprofen for my headache– it was one of the worst ones I’ve ever felt– but I didn’t want the Ibuprofen to break my fever. The way I see it, our bodies naturally try to kill off the bacteria or virus by creating a fever to “cook” them away… and I certainly don’t want to stop my body’s attempts at making me better! So, I suffered through a brutal headache for almost an entire day. Ouch. But, the next day I felt WAY better, so I’d say it was worth it. I think it’s worth noting, however, that if my flu lasted longer than a week, I would go see my doctor– and if it were something serious, I absolutely would take antibiotics. That’s a totally different story.

Listened to my body when it came to food. On Thursday, I couldn’t stand the idea of fresh veggie juice or salads– or really, anything cold. Only cooked foods sounded appealing, so that’s what I had. Homemade veggie soup, steamed sweet potato pudding, and a couple eggs seemed to keep me warm and grounded. Surprisingly, dark chocolate didn’t sound good, either… so you know I was sick. By Friday, though, I was already feeling better, and was able to eat a few more of my everyday staples, like fresh veggie juice and salad. It also helped that we had a CSA delivery that morning, and I had to use up our veggies to make room in our tiny fridge! Nothing like a little motivation to get us juicing again…

While I’m not sure any of these things truly helped me recover any faster, I’m already feeling so much better. Whew!

Unfortunately, Austin’s taken now my place– catching the same virus just a day after me. I just made him take a spoonful of Sonne’s #7, so hopefully he’ll be recovered by Sunday. He’s seriously looking forward to the Superbowl, and I don’t think he dreams of watching it while stuck in bed with a fever. Crossing our fingers!!

Hi Sorry that you are not feeling well, hope you are getting better. Have you read book perfect health diet? It is the best book I have ever read ( and I have read lots of them all from Natalia Rose, Kimberly Snyder, Thrive books, The china Study, all paleo book from Mark Sisson, Robb Wolf, Loren Cordain etc.) But this book is different level, two Harward scientist have written it. Highly recomend it. I have read it in one day one whole night. No food combinig there is no nutritional medical, or any other reason to follow or other thing like never eat fruit with polyunsaturated fat, and that fructose is treated by body as poison etc.

      They have a great blog too, I just can say enough how great that book is. You know it is not only book about perfect diet but also logically answer all questions about it.


        From looking at their website, it looks VERY similar to our “modified Paleo” approach that we’ve been doing lately. I’m excited to read more!


          yes they suggest much lower protein intake then other paleo and include safe starch. They explain why we do not need as much protein as paleoΕ› recomend in their books. I think you will like it. You can find many information on their blog


I’m not even sure this is entirely healthy, but last week I had food poisoning and couple 2T of raw apple cider vinegar in a glass of water twice just about cured it. If I wake up feeling a little under the weather, I’ll take some oil of oregano. Although since cleaning up my diet and going vegan 2 years ago, I have yet to get a cold or the flu… fingers crossed though. Make getting sick after the cleanse is the body still detoxing?


    I totally forgot about raw apple cider vinegar– I just took a shot of it as I read your comment. πŸ™‚ I took some Fungal Defense, too, which has oil of oregano in it, so hopefully all of these efforts will help keep this thing from getting any worse.

    My first thought was actually “maybe this is a detox symptom?” But, then I realized that everyone around me has almost the exact same symptoms– so it’s more likely that this was just a strong virus. Other than this case, I’d been pretty immune since cleaning up my diet, too!


For the Sonnes 7 isn’t only best to take day before colonic?


    It is definitely best before a colonic, but since I’m unable to drive the 45 minutes to my hydrotherapist at the moment, I figured I could make due without. Enemas always work in a pinch, and the extra magnesium from the epsom salt baths and Natural Calm help move things out, too!

Awww, I’m sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well. I tend to push and push and live in denial that I’m sick until I literally can’t get out of bed. I always like getting take-out broth based soups from Thai are Vietnamese restaurants when I’m sick. I also like to turn on Pretty in Pink or The Breakfast Club. Relax and hopefully this will pass by the end of the weekend.


    I was in total denial, too– convinced this was just a detox symptom or something. Until all I could do was lay in bed! Sounds like you have a good routine to handle it, though! Austin and I rented some movies for the weekend, too. πŸ˜‰

so glad it was short lived! The bug hit my hubby & I too, we were out for a day~ but on a postitive note~ it was ONLY a day! I can’t imagine being in a constant state of dis~ease & then getting sick for a week or more… This is what being healthy can do, it doesn’t mean you don’t get sick, but rather means you know how to take care of yourself when you do feel a little ill (& it never lasts long!!)

Aw man, I feel ya. I can be the epitome of health and still crash with a horrible flu. For me the main thing behind getting sick is stress and not enough sleep!


Oh goodness, this bug seems to be hitting ready for it to go away! My stomach felt funk on Thursday and Friday…I just tried to take things light, go at an easier pace and drink lemon ginger tea! Seems to be helping!
