This Strawberry Banana Smoothie is a delicious way to get more nutrients into your day. Made with frozen strawberries and creamy banana, it has a texture and flavor you’ll love.

This recipe calls for frozen fruit because it’s convenient and affordable.Frozen fruit creates a slushy texture, almost like a milkshake. It’s also naturally gluten-free and kid-friendly!

I tested this smoothie recipe multiple times until my kids (11 and 8 years old) approved it.

Frozen Banana tip

Frozen bananas have an ice cream-like texture, making them perfect for a healthy smoothie. They add sweetness and creaminess. To freeze ripe bananas, peel and store them whole in an airtight container overnight (or for up to 3 months). Before blending a frozen banana into a smoothie, cut it into chunks to help it break down faster.

This strawberry banana smoothie recipe also calls for orange juice because frozen strawberries and bananas can be bland when blended with milk alone.

If you don’t believe me, try it. (Spoiler alert: It’s bland.)

Orange juice adds flavor and a little extra sweetness to this recipe. If you don’t have orange juice, you can add a pitted Medjool date, maple syrup, or honey as a sweetener.

How to Make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie

In a high speed blender, combine 1 cup of your favorite milk, 1 cup whole frozen strawberries, 1 frozen banana, sliced into chunks, and a 1/2 cup of orange juice.

Detoxinista Tip

Any milk will work for this recipe. Use oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk to keep it dairy-free, if needed.

Secure the lid and blend until smooth. Stop and scrape down the sides of your blender if needed.

Once the smoothie is blended, you can taste it and make any adjustments. For a sweeter smoothie, add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup. Or add a pitted Medjool date for extra natural sweetness and blend again.

You can also add a splash of vanilla extract or a dash of cinnamon if you like. Serve this strawberry banana smoothie right away for the best texture and flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add protein to this smoothie recipe?

Yes, of course! Add a 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt  or 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder for an easy protein boost. You can also add a tablespoon of chia seeds or hulled hemp seeds to make it more filling.

Can I make this a green smoothie?

Yes, add a handful of spinach when blending. It will change the color but not the flavor! If you prefer to add a different leafy green, like kale, check out my Kale Smoothie recipe.

Can I use different fruits?

Of course! Swap the strawberries for blueberries or any other berries you love.

Is this recipe vegan?

This recipe is vegan when you use non-dairy milk as the liquid. For the best texture, don’t use canned coconut milk. (It thickens too much with cold ingredients.)

Nutrition information is for the whole recipe, assuming you use soy milk. This information is automatically calculated using a generic ingredient database, so this is just an estimate and not a guarantee.
Have leftovers? Leftover smoothie can be poured into mini ice pop molds for a frozen treat later.
Update Note: This recipe was updated in 2025 to omit the optional pitted Medjool date from the ingredient list. You can still add it if you need more sweetness, though!

  1. Oh–and I usually use oat milk (almond allergy) and add some coconut yogurt (dairy allergy) to mine.

Still, anything that gets more fruit and other healthy goodies into my middle-aged carcass, the better. I make do with what I can have.

  2. So happy you included Medjool dates. I love dates, but everyone else seems to hate them.

This smoothie is a little too sweet for my tastes (and my diabetes), as is, but I solved that by taking out the orange juice and throwing in some avocado or spinach. I usually replace some of the strawberries with raspberries and blueberries. I usually replace the banana (big no-no for diabetics) with kiwi (potassium champion!). Depends on what I have on hand, or what I’m in the mood for, or what my body seems to need at a given time.

That’s the beauty of these smoothies–once you get a good recipe, like this one, you can start swapping in or out to your heart’s content.
